This software supports nearly all common formats. With 7 Zip you can pack and unpack the formats ZIP (.zip), BZIP2 (.bz2), GZIP (.gz), TAR (.tar), XZ (.xz) and WIM (.wim). The best compression rate can be achieved with the specially developed format 7Z (.7z)

In addition, archives can be unpacked, if they were packed with the RAR (.rar), ARJ (.arj), CPIO(.cpio, .io) or LHARC (.lzh, .lha) format. Even some program archives like Microsoft Cabinet (.cab), Java Archive (.jar), Debian-Packages (.deb) Windows-Installer-Files (.msi), Nullsoft Scriptable Install System (.exe)and RPM Package Manager (.rpm) can be opened. Furthermore, also ISO Images for CDs and DVDs (.iso), Flash Videos (.flv) and raw LZMA streams (.lzma) are supported.

The program integrates into the context menu of Windows, so that you can easily access compressed files or pack files.

In 2007, the tool was awarded by SourceForge as the best Open Source project.

Versions for Linux and Mac

7Zip is a pure Windows application. However, other developers have created 7zX for Mac and p7zip for Linux to make the 7Z format also available to users of these operating systems.
