The freeware tool GSpot shows you the codec of video files and some additional information. The program was originally designed to determine the codec of AVI files, but now it has been extended and supports 719 video and 245 audio formats. Also information on the file formats MOV, WMV, MP4, MPEG1/2/4, DV1/2, MP4, MP3, FLV, AAC, AC3, H263, H264 and DTS are now supported.

Additionally, the program displays more information about the video files such as duration, frame rate, bit rate and hidden information and indicates whether the necessary codecs are installed on your system.

The files can be dragged onto the program to get the information or you can install the program in the "Send to" context menu so that it can be called with a right-click on a file.

Alternatives

An alternative to GSpot is the tool MediaInfo. While GSport is only available for Windows, MediaInfo supports nearly all common systems. In addition, also more video formats are supported by MediaInfo.
