OpenTTD is an open source clone of the simulation and strategy game Transport Tycoon Deluxe, which was released in 1994 by Chris Sawyer. Unlike the original, the Open Source implementation has many additional features and is released for multiple operating systems. Moreover, most of the features from the original game are also implemented.

OpenTTD is a strategy game in which it comes to urban planning and economic simulation. The aim of the game is to earn money with a transportation company by transporting people and goods through rail, land, air and water. At that, you have to compete against other companies and you have to build up profitable facilities.

The player must build a transportation network that can consist of ships, buses, boats, trucks and aircrafts. This network must connect cities and industries on the map. After each successful connection, the player receives money, which he can re-invest in infrastructure to expand the network. While the time passes in the game, more and more new technologies are available that enable better transport but also are more expensive.

• Multiplayer mode: The game can be played in single player mode alone, but you can also play against other players over the Internet or a LAN network. The original game supports this function only through an unofficial TTDPatch.
• The game was translated by the community in over 50 languages​​.
• During the game you can save screenshots in the formats BMP, PNG or PCX.
• The game runs from 1950 to 2005 and goes through a development with newer and newer technologies. For example, in 2002 the euro is introduced and newer transport vehicles are possible from time to time.
