SHOUTcast is a free program that can be used as streaming server for audio and TV streams. With this program, even inexperienced users can quickly and easily set up and operate their own Internet radio station.

To compress the stream, SHOUTcast uses the MP3 format and the used transfer protocol is HTTP. The program also offers the possibility to display the current song to the listeners.

Programs for playback

To be able to receive the audio streams, special programs (clients) are required. For example, you can us the VLC media player, iTunes, Zinf or the software Winamp from the same company like SHOUTcast. If you offer an internet radio, listeners must therefore use one of the programs to access to your stream. The link to your stream is usually packed into a M3U or PLS file. You can give this file to your listeners and they can open it in one of the playback programs. If you only want to save the radio stream as MP3 files, you can use the tool Streamripper (Win, Mac, Linux) or the RadioRipper (Win). These tools even make it possible to save each song as a new file.

Directory of radio stations

A directory of over 40,000 radio stations is available on the home page of SHOUTcast (see our link to the homepage). The stations are sorted by genre, so you can quickly find a radio that suits your tastes. As an operator of an Internet radio, you can also make your radio known by submitting to this list.
