Lots of files require completely different codecs although they have the same file extension. So, how can you get the codec from an AVI file, from a MPEG video or from other files with various format? We show you, what you can do.

Required Tools

Some media players are providing enough information about the video format. But if you want to have detailed information, you should use one of the following software tools:

GSpot

GSpot is only available for Windows. Vieo files can be dragged onto the program or you call the tool via a right click on the file. After that you can immediately see a window with information about the file.

MediaInfo

The tool MediaInfo works in the same way. Also in this software, files can be opened via the context menu or you can drag files onto the program to show their information. But MediaInfo provides some advantages over GSpot. First of all, it supports almost all operating systems and also more file formats are supported. Secondly, the program offers a custom display and you can export information in various formats like HTML, text or  CSV. In addition to the technical information, also tag information can be displayed with MediaInfo.

MediaInfo for Developer

Even for software developers, MediaInfo provides a special feature. The MediaInfo.dll can be easily integrated into your own programs so that you can quickly and easily access the technical and tag information from media files to reuse them in the program.
