MySQL has now been installed for more than 6 million times and is regarded as the most famouse and most popular database system in the world. Together with Apache and PHP, MySQL forms the basis for most dynamic websites such as forums, blogs or content management systems (CMS). The popular pages Google, Wikipedia and Twitter use MySQL databases.
MySQL was first developed by the Swedish company MySQL AB. In 2008 the company was acquired by Sun Microsystems and since 2010, MySQL was developed by Oracle.
Oracle offers the program under two licenses. On the one hand, MySQL is available as open source under the GPL license, on the other hand, there is also a commercial license. The commercial license comes with support, counseling, montly updates and a release of liability from damage claims.
