Skype is a free Voice Over IP software that lets you make calls through the Internet (including video telephony). Furthemore, instant messaging features and data transfer functions are included. Calls to other Skype users are free, but also fee-based calls to landlines and mobile networks are possible (SkypeOut). In some countries it is also possible to request a number, so that you can receive a call from a landline to Skype (SkypeIn). Besides the calls to only one person, also conference calls with up to 25 people are possible.

Unfortunately, the use of the Skype VoIP protocol is not open, so that it can only be used with the Skype software. However, you may also use programs like Trillian or Miranda to connect to parts of the network.

Meanwhile, there are also fixed-line phones, which can be connected directly via the Internet to the Skype network. So, you can call someone very cheap. In addition, for some mobile phones Skype is available.

In addition to the install version, a portable version of Skype is available.
