DOSBox emulates the operating system DOS on your Windows, Mac or Linux computer. In addition to the operating system DOS, the emulator also emulates the hardware that was available at this time such as sound cards, video cards, the mouse, joysticks or modems. Thus, you can easily and simply run your old DOS software and your old DOS games with DOSBox on your computer today, although the programs would otherwise not or only partially compatible with today's hardware and operating systems. So, for example, you can run old 16bit software on modern 32bit or 64bit systems. Since DOSBox emulates all the hardware, DOS can also be used with DOSBox on platforms that do not have an x86 processor.
DOSBox starts in a normal window on your computer and displays the usual DOS command-line interface in a normal window from which you can run and install the DOS programs in the usual manner.
Running old DOS games
The main concern of the developers is the wide variety of old DOS games, that many of their fans would love to play again. A list of more than 1000 supported games can be found here: DOS games for DOSBox. Since the program originally was developed for the games, the support of printers or networks are in an early phase of development.
