The author Andre Wiethoff developed the software because he was dissatisfied with other audio grabber software, especially their way to deal with damaged CDs. Exact Audio Copy can deal with scratched CDs and makes accurate and exact copies of the songs possible. With this tool, it is therefore possible to read CDs that fail in other comparable programs.

Other features include the offset correction, the use of C2 error information from the drive and the ability to query the freedb database to determine authors and titles of the CD.
