NetBeans IDE is a free and platform-independent development environment (IDE), written entirely in Java. The IDE was initially developed for the programming of Java applications, but by now the program also supports many other languages such as Java, C, C++, JavaScript, Fortran, PHP and Ruby. In addition, the IDE can be extended with packs and plug-ins, so that the application can be used for other areas and other programming languages. With this, you can get more functions or even replace parts of the program for your individual purposes.

In addition to the direct supported languages mentioned above, there are also plugins for the languages Ada, Adobe Flex, Clojure, Coco/R, Erlang, Fortress, Groovy, JavaMath, JavaFX, Perl, PL/SQL, Prolog, Python, Scala, SmartFrog, Tcl, TeX, LaTeX, VRML and X3D. In addition to the plug-ins, there are so-called packs that make the IDE usable for a specific application field. Among other things, there are packs for the development of mobile applications (Mobility), desktop Java applications (Java SE), UML modeling and design (UML modeling), and others.

The integrated Matisse GUI Builder enables the design of graphical user interfaces for programs without a detailed knowledge of swing programming and elements.

Another similar development environment is Eclipse.
