Prime95 is primarily a program for finding primes but it can also be used to test and benchmark your computer. By calculating the prime numbers, your computer can be brought to its limits and the software gives you an error message before the computer is damaged from which you can learn more about your system.
Using a highly-optimized processor code, Prime95 comes with one of the fastest implementations for finding prime numbers. The nine largest known primes have been identified through the program Prime95 under the Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search (GIMPS) project. This project seeks previously unknown primes via multiple computers that are connected via the Internet.
Stress tests and Benchmarks
Prime95 can also be used as a stress test or to benchmark your computer. Since the calculation of prime numbers greatly claims the CPU, accordingly the heat increases. Via plausibility checks, the program recognize whether there are any hardware-related errors in the calculation of the overclocked system. Furthermore, the program provides many results on how much time certain calculations need and what the achieved system throughput is. So, Prime95 can also be used as a benchmark tool or for a comparison of different systems.
The Windows version is named Prime95 (prime95.exe). The Windows 64-bit version is titled Prime64 (prime64.exe). The Mac version is also called Prime95 while the Linux version is named MPrime.
