Prototype is a great collection of functions for Javascript and Ajax for using on a website. If you include Prototype into your Internet page, you can go back to the extensive functions and you save a lot of time, because you do not need all the functions on your own. In the meantime, lots of websites, also commercial pages, are using Prototype as a basis of lots of other functions.

Examples for Using

Prototype makes it easy to access DOM elements on a website. Instead of writing document.getElementById("id"), with Prototype, you can use the function $("id") to access an element by its ID. WIth  $F("id", you can directly grab values from elements. This function delivers the contents of textareas, input boxes or the assignment of checkboxes. Furthermore, with Ajax.Request, you can use a browser independent XMLHttpRequest and you can go on working with the data immediately. So, Prototype saves a lot of writing and it makes lots of things easier.

Special Features

Although JavaScript, do not support object oriented programming by itself, Protype builds the basis for an object oriented JavaScript. It offers special functions to do so.
