The command line tool, FFmpeg contains a collection of various audio and video codecs. It can be used to record and convert audio files and video files as well as embed them into various container formats. Moreover, it is possible to send audio and video streams with the program.

Among other things, with the tool it is possible to convert audio and video files to another format. FFmpeg contains the library libavcodec, which can be used in other programs. This library contains all FFmpeg encoder and decoder for audio and video files. Supported formats are AVI, MPEG-2, MP4, AAC, AC3, MOV, MKV, OGG Vorbis, Monkeys Audio, TTA, Matroska, SWF, WMA, H.264, RealVideo, RealAudio, ALAC, MLP/TrueHD, Flash Screen Video and WMV. Furthermore, it is also possible to record streams from a TV card with this program.
