Fortunately, there is the program Index Author. This program takes care of all of the work. The program creates an index according to certain criteria from text files or Word documents. It offers several options. It is either possible to list the page numbers and keywords or you can include references to specific files or you can create a simple list of all the relevant keywords from one or more files. An output can both be stored or directly copied to the clipboard.

In general, the default settings already create good results. Nevertheless, arbitrary criteria can be defined and customized. It is for example possible to create an exclusion list of certain words (by default, some words are already registered) or create a list of words that should be definitely in the index. The page numbers can be adapted or rewriten arbitrary or you can include or exclude words with special criteria, for example word lengths or upper or lower case words. Even the recognition of related words such as names is supported and you can add new words to existing keyword lists.
