The input in LilyPond is not carried out by using a graphical user interface like it is in other notation programs. Instead, a text file is use similar to LaTeX. This text file describes the notes like a programming language. An example is the string c4 gg cc c4 for the individual notes and the respective duration.

The text is then interpreted or compiled by LilyPond, which then results in visible and beautiful note sheets. An export of the music sheet is available in the formats PDF, PS, PNG, SVG as well as the MIDI audio format.

• Programs such as Denemo, NoteEdit, TuxGuitar or Rosegarden allow using LilyPond with a graphical user interface.
• The plugin OOoLilyPond makes it possible to use the LilyPond code directly in OpenOffice.
• The program MuseScore is another software solution for creating note sheets. In this application with graphical interface, you can export files in the LilyPond format to get the advantages of LilyPond without using the LilyPond source editor.
